The ASEAN-IPR Regional Youth Conference on Peace & Tolerance takes on the theme “Building Unity and Common Understanding in Countering Intolerance and Violent Extremism”, was conducted on 19-20 October 2018 in Jakarta, Indonesia. This conference is joint initiatives from ASEAN-IPR and the Government of Indonesia, with the support from the Government of the Republic of Korea as well as the Maarif Institute – to empower the youth and enhance their capacity to prevent the rise of radicalization and violent extremism. On the sidelines of the conference, ASEAN-IPR also organised a Youth Exhibition as a side event activity, that are intended to promote the culture of peace among the youth.
Outcome
The conference issued an ASEAN Youth Declaration on Peace and Tolerance and its Plan of action to implement the declaration in a concrete way. The declaration was crafted by ASEAN youth through working group discussion, reflecting their commitment to contribute to the prevention and countering violent extremism in the region. Furthermore, the declaration also comprises the policy recommendation by the youth for ASEAN leaders in the field of prevention and countering violent extremism.
